Shape, Scrape and Paint: Altering Surfaces
June 4th through 7th
Wednesday through Saturday, 9:00-5:00

For as long as there have been books, bookmakers have applied distinctive,
expressive designs to the covers of their creations. This two-part workshop
explores historic decorative techniques in conjunction with modern
possibilities: gold and blind tooling alongside applications of plastics,
wood veneers, metals and other surface alterations. Get ready to sand,
shape, scrape, paint, draw, emboss, deboss, and craft the tools required for
the execution of these techniques. Design and produce several plaquettes for
use as examples in future book projects. Participants work primarily on
leather surfaces, so experience in gold tooling and leather binding is
helpful but not necessary.

Celebrated book artist Don Glaister lives and works on Vashon Island,
Washington. Don incorporates unexpected materials, visual humor, and
spontaneous expression in book forms structured around classical, European,
binding traditions. His recent work includes two editions of artists’ books,
“Brooklyn Bridge: A Love Song” and “Angelique and the Pearl
Necklace”. Partial funding provided by the Utah Arts Council.

Instructor: Don Glaister, Washington
Place: Book Arts Program at the J. Willard Marriott Library, University of
Utah, Salt Lake City, UT
Workshop fee: $300; Materials fee: $55

The Summer 2008 North Bennet Street School Workshop catalog is available on our website. I’m also attaching a pdf of the catalog. We have many exciting workshops coming up - British pop-up artist extraordinaire Paul Johnson is giving a free lecture and offering two workshops in July, and we’ve got Dan Kelm coming from Western Mass to lead a Chemistry for Binders class, as well as Jeff Peachey with an
18th Century French Bindings class, Jim Reid-Cunningham on Vellum Stiffboard Binding, our very own Jeff Altepeter with an Intro to Leather Paring and Cloth Case, Part II, and so much more, including marbling with Chena River Marblers, calligraphy, girdle books, and Mark Andersson making a triumphant return to the East coast to lead a leaf casting symposium and gold tooling workshop. Please check out our ever-expanding (and so many new) offerings, and call or email with any questions. We look forward to seeing many of you
here in Boston.

Richard Minsky at University of Arts

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008
From the University of Arts:
Richard Minsky: von Hess Artist-in-Residence Lecture
Join von Hess Artist-in-Residence Richard Minsky for a lecture as he discusses life as a book artist. Since 1973, Minsky has challenged the bookbinding establishment.

A traditionally trained bookbinder, Minsky focuses on making the book an expression of art, and has influenced generations of book artists to use the materials and structure as metaphors in their work.

Minsky founded the Center for Book Arts, an independent not-for-profit organization in New York City that is a model for similar facilities nationwide. His work is in public collections at Yale University, Victoria and Albert Museum, The Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry, Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art.

The von Hess Visiting Artist Program in UArts’ Borowsky Center is funded through the generosity of the Richard C. von Hess Foundation. The Borowsky Center invites visiting artists to explore the creative potential of the offset medium. The Center facilitates image-making as a synthesis of hand-work, photography and digital imagery.
