Art, Fact, and Artifact: The Book in Time and Place

CBAA Biennial Conference Call for Proposals: Due June 1, 2008

College Book Art Association
Biennial Conference
Art, Fact, and Artifact: The Book in Time and Place
January 8-10, 2009
Hosted by the University of Iowa Center for the Book

The art of the book has been at once visionary and documentary, imagining a future that has yet to exist while finding inspiration from the resources of the past. The first biennial conference of the College Book Art Association seeks to bridge the worlds of book art, book history, cultural criticism, and curatorial work through appreciation of the book as an aesthetic sensorium. Along with session programming, the conference agenda will include keynote speakers, exhibits, tours of facilities, open discussion time, and portfolio reviews.

For the conference program, the organizers invite submissions for individual presentations, pre-formed panels, and studio demonstrations.
Proposals Due June 1, 2008.

The UI Center for the Book encourages graduate student participation and has secured funding to assist students with conference expenses.

Invitation to the bel libro 2009

Prize for Innovation: centro del bel libro ascona

The centro del bel libro held numerous international bookbinding competitions in the past, all of which proved successful. In order to pursue a new direction, this was replaced by the bel libro competition in 2003.

The second international bel libro competition will now be held in 2009 and professional bookbinders worldwide are invited to participate. For the bel libro 2009, apprentices will not be allowed to participate, but may enter the international competition for apprentices, which will be held simultaneously. The competition will be organized by the Foundation for the sponsorship of Bookbinding (SfB). Both competitions take place in Ascona.

The bel libro competition wishes to present innovations, assuring the quality of design, technique and function, and to also show new directions in the field of hand bookbinding.

Set of criteria: innovative technique; innovative function; innovative design.

The book to be bound was chosen by the members of the bel libro organisation and specially printed for the 2009 competition. The work is by Rainer Maria Rilke, entitled “Cornet” and printed in three languages. It is a special edition published by Kranich. The text block comes in loose sections.

The fee for each book is 120.00 Euros. Payment is to be sent to:
Credit Suisse CH-8060 Zürich-Flughafen, account 0671-852267-12-3, Kontokorrent EUR “bel libro 2009”
IBAN: CH78 0483 5085 2267 1200 3
Bankclearing Nummer: 4835
SWIFT: CRESCHZZ80A

Included in the fee are a confirmation of participation for all the judged bindings, a diploma for every award winner as well as, insurance and the cost of returning the book.

A maximum of two books can be entered for judging. The ordered books will be sent after receipt of application and payment.

Assessment will be by an international jury under the supervision of Hans Burkhardt.

Prize for Innovation:
A total prize sum of CHF 15’000 is available. A maximum 5% of all entries will receive this award.

The award ceremony is planned for 13 June 2009 in Ascona.

All applications to be received by 30 August 2008, and must contain the following information:
